Botanical Gardens

Tourists and locals alike will be astonished to discover Blue River Botanical Gardens, found in Costa Rica's cool, mountain rainforest. There are over 800 different varietals, the orchid garden, butterfly gardens, hummingbird center, frog, fish and turtle ponds. No matter the time of year, there are plenty of interesting and colourful plants to observe. If this is a hobby of yours, plan on spending the day.

Each major species of trees and flowers are grouped together. Meandering through the tropical rain forest trails you will be enticed to stop, sit on one of the benches, taking in the colors, smells and beauty. Specific species attract toucans and other colorful birds. Walk past a huge old hollow tree inhabited by bats, Visit a lagoon in its natural habitat teeming with fish, frogs, turtles and iguanas. The Hummingbird center attracts several of Costa Rica's 51 species of hummingbirds with feeders surrounding a quaint koi fish pond. Costa Rica's butterflies are always a major draw, and our butterfly gardens won't disappoint. See a large collection of orchids, found deep inside the rainforest. And view a unique habitat where our 60 degree Celsius hot springs comes bubbling to the surface; the source for our natural mineral hot spring pools.

Blue River Botanical Garden's mission includes developing a representative Costa Rica rain forest to serve as an education center to teach young and old alike the importance of conserving Costa Rica's incredible nature-offerings. The botanical gardens serve as an outdoor classroom for everyone to learn about the rain forest's complexity and value. The signs and pamphlets teach the species and the stories behind their genesis. Guided tours are available upon request.
